Virtual Exhibition: Discovering Chosŏn Korean Potters in Tokugawa Japan

As part of the Aftermath project, Dr Seung Yeon Sang and Prof. Rebekah Clements have curated an online exhibition about the experiences of captured Chosŏn Korean potters, who were taken to Japan during Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s invasions of Korea.

Stories of Clay: Discovering Chosŏn Korean Potters in Tokugawa Japan” is a digital history project that combines the study of heirloom ceramics and sherds, together with documentary evidence, in order to trace the lives and works of Korean potters in southwestern Japan after the Imjin War.

The exhibition website includes original research considered together with current scholarship, downloadable worksheets  for educators, and an ongoing video series of expert talks. More videos will be added to the website in the coming months.
