Dr Yongchao Cheng Joins Aftermath as a Visiting Researcher

In March of 2020, Dr Yongchao Cheng, Designated Assistant Professor at Nagoya University, will be spending time on the Aftermath Project as a Visiting Researcher. Yongchao works on early modern Japanese history, specializing in the trilateral study of international relations between Japan, China, and Korea in the 17-19th centuries. Her forthcoming book, Kinsei Nihon Chōsen Chūgoku sangoku kankeishi no kenkyū (Trilateral Relationships among Japan, Korea, and China in 17th-19th Centuries, exp. 2021, Seibundo shuppan) examines the Chosŏn Embassies to Tokugawa Japan and Chosŏn Embassies to Ming-Qing China in order to analyse the indirect relationship between Qing China and Tokugawa Japan as mediated by the Chosŏn Dynasty.

Yongchao received her PhD from Nagoya University, where she now teaches East Asian history, and has held visiting positions at Princeton University and Seoul National University.
